December 5, 2021

This week in our continuing Bible Character Series, we look at Joseph.  No, not the one who was a leader of Egypt.  But the one who was chosen by God to be the husband of Mary, keep her as a virgin until Christ was born, and be the earthly father of Jesus.
We discover that God chose Joseph because he was compassionate, kind, loving, obedient and a good protector of Mary and her Son, Jesus Christ.

Matthew 1:24- (NASB)

[24] And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,

After singing a few songs, then as a congregation we read together aloud the following scripture...

Isaiah 9:2-7 (NASB)

[2] The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them.

[3] You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with the gladness of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

[4] For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.

[5] For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.

[6] For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

[7] There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.

Here is the text - New American Standard Bible
Matthew 1:18-25
Matthew 2:13-15
Matthew 2:19-23
Luke 1:26-27

Matthew 1:18-25
[18] Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

[19] And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.

[20] But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

[21] She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."

[22] Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

[23] "Behold, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH child AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "God WITH US."

[24] And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,

[25] but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

Matthew 2:13-15
[13] Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him."

[14] So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.

[15] He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "Out OF EGYPT I CALLED My SON."

Matthew 2:19-23
[19] But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said,

[20] "Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child's life are dead."

[21] So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. [

22] But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee,

[23] and came and lived in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: "He shall be called a Nazarene."

Luke 1:26-27
[26] Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth,

[27] to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
