Not a lot is know about Stephen. As a matter of fact everything known about Stephen is in the book of Acts. And only a few chapters and a couple of verses.
But from what we can gather, Stephen was a great man of character and as recorded in Acts was the first martyr for Christ in the early church.
And believe it or not, today people are still killed for believing in Christ.
As a matter of fact this weekend is the sixty-fifth anniversary of a terrible tragedy that God used for His glory to promote His kingdom and bring love and reconciliation to a lost group of people in the jungles of Ecuador.

After singing a few songs, then as a congregation we read together aloud the following scripture...
Acts 6:1-8
Stephen is Chosen to Be a Deacon
1 Now at this time, as the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint developed on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.
2 So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables.
3 Instead, brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.
4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
5 The announcement found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch.
6 And they brought these men before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them.
7 The word of God kept spreading; and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith.
8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people.

Acts 6:5 & 8
5 The announcement found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch.
8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people.
Acts 7:55, 56 & 60
55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;
56 and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he fell asleep.
